Thunderstorms and snowfall are expected in most districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from Monday night to Tuesday, prompting the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) to issue an alert and direct district administrations to take precautionary measures.
According to the PDMA, thunderstorms accompanied by snowfall are likely in the upper districts of the province, including Abbottabad, Haripur, Mansehra, Upper and Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Battagram, Shangla, Upper and Lower Kohistan, and Kolai Palas. Snowfall is expected in mountainous areas during the period.
Intermittent rain has also been forecast for the plain districts, including Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Kohat, Hangu, Karak, Bannu, North and South Waziristan, Lakki Marwat, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan.
The PDMA said that roads in upper areas, including Naran, Kaghan, Kalam and Chitral, have become slippery and some routes have been closed due to rain and snowfall.
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the authority has instructed all district administrations, Rescue 1122 and relevant departments to remain on high alert. Citizens have been advised to stay in safe places during strong winds, thunderstorms and snowfall, while tourists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to upper and snowbound areas.
The PDMA has also advised farmers and livestock owners to take precautionary measures to protect crops and animals. Directions have been issued to closely monitor rivers and storm drains in sensitive areas to avert any untoward situation.
The PDMA spokesperson said that the Emergency Operations Centre remains active, and the public can contact the free helpline 1700 for information and assistance.
