CHARSADDA
Awami National Party (ANP) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa President Mian Iftikhar Hussain strongly condemned the killing of religious scholar Maulana Sheikh Idrees, terming the incident deeply painful and regrettable, and announced a three-day mourning period.
Addressing a condolence gathering in Charsadda here on Wednesday, Mian Iftikhar Hussain questioned how long such incidents would continue on the land of Pakhtuns, stating that the region has been suffering from violence and bloodshed for decades.
He said no segment of society has remained safe from terrorism, adding that homes, markets, mosques and educational institutions have all been targeted.
He questioned the justification of killing innocent people, asking under which law or religion such acts could be permitted, and called for serious reflection on the roots of violence in the country.
The ANP leader stressed that peace must be restored in KP and Balochistan, similar to other provinces, and urged both federal and provincial governments to take joint responsibility for eliminating terrorism.
He reiterated that ANP, following the philosophy of non-violence of Bacha Khan, has consistently opposed violence and has itself rendered over 1,200 sacrifices in the fight against terrorism.
Expressing solidarity with the bereaved family, he said the party shares their grief and announced a three-day mourning period.
Mian Iftikhar Hussain also emphasized the need for unity among Pakhtuns, warning that divisions would only embolden hostile elements. He called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in the killing of Maulana Idrees.
He concluded by offering prayers for the departed soul and extending condolences to the family, including the deceased’s brother Maulana Yousuf and son Maulana Anis Ahmed.
