The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Irrigation Department and UET Peshawar on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding for third-party validation and supervision of dredging and desilting works in critical urban waterways across the province.
The agreement was finalised at a ceremony in the Irrigation Department, attended by Secretary Irrigation Muhammad Abid Wazir and UET Peshawar Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Sadiq Khattak. Wazir said the Provincial Development Working Party had on April 9, 2026, approved a non-ADP scheme worth Rs4,793.6m for cleaning and restoring urban waterways.
He said KP has about 322km of critical urban waterways at 466 points in 18 districts, and the project would increase carrying capacity by 67pc.
The MoU aims to ensure transparent monitoring, technical evaluation and quality assurance of cleaning, dredging and desilting works. Wazir said improved drainage would reduce urban flooding risks during heavy rains.
Joint teams from UET Peshawar and the Irrigation Department will carry out monitoring and validation to ensure works meet standards.
Wazir also said the department had carried out the highest number of anti-encroachment actions on canals and waterways, and had retrieved land from hotels between Barikot and Kalam to restore natural water flows.
