Dr Muhammad Abid Khan, Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), has earned recognition for his contributions to thoracic surgery, medical education and clinical research, emerging as one of Pakistan’s leading specialists in the field.
With more than two decades of surgical experience, Dr Khan has played a key role in advancing thoracic surgery at LRH through the introduction of innovative and minimally invasive procedures while training postgraduate surgeons.
A graduate of Bolan Medical College, University of Balochistan, he obtained his Fellowship in General Surgery from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in 2006 and completed his Fellowship in Thoracic Surgery in 2018. He also received advanced thoracic surgery training in Singapore and specialised Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) training in Germany.
Dr Khan has introduced several advanced surgical techniques at LRH, including hybrid and total mechanical gastroesophageal anastomosis, hybrid gastrojejunal anastomosis in Roux-en-Y reconstruction, three-port and uniportal VATS thymectomy, and uniportal VATS management of clotted haemothorax.
Besides his clinical responsibilities, he serves as a CPSP supervisor, examiner and paper setter in thoracic surgery. He is also a reviewer for the Journal of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and an examiner for postgraduate thoracic surgery programmes at the University of Health Sciences.
He has represented Pakistan at international scientific conferences and surgical congresses across Asia, Australia and the Middle East, presenting research on oesophageal surgery, thoracic trauma, pulmonary diseases, minimally invasive surgery, empyema thoracis and other complex thoracic conditions.
Dr Khan has authored numerous research papers published in national and international peer-reviewed journals and has organised international Uniportal VATS workshops at Lady Reading Hospital to promote minimally invasive thoracic surgery and strengthen surgical training in Pakistan.
