The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has taken action against a substandard ketchup manufacturing unit and an illegal water plant in different areas of Peshawar, destroying 3,500kg/litre of unsafe products during the raids.
The action was taken following public complaints and intelligence reports, with food safety teams carrying out the operations under the supervision of Deputy Director Zeeshan Mehsud.
According to a spokesperson for the Food Authority, 2,000kg of substandard ketchup was recovered from the ketchup manufacturing unit and destroyed on the spot. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against the owners for violating food safety regulations.
In another raid, the authority sealed an illegal water plant where 1,500 litres of unsafe water was found and disposed of. Several empty bottles bearing different brand names were also recovered during the operation and taken into custody.
The spokesperson said the water plant was sealed for violating food safety laws and hygiene standards, while further legal action against those responsible had been initiated.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Food Dr Muhammad Israr Khan expressed satisfaction over the action and said the provincial government was taking effective measures to ensure the provision of safe, quality and halal food to citizens.
He said strict action would continue against those involved in preparing or selling substandard, adulterated or hazardous food products, adding that no one would be allowed to compromise public health.
Dr Israr Khan urged citizens to report complaints regarding unsafe food or adulteration to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority so that timely action could be taken to protect public health.
