Recognizing the paramount significance of clean energy, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has taken a monumental step by adopting a resolution co-sponsored by Pakistan, designating January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy. This resolution, adopted unanimously, underscores the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to environmental protection.
This newfound day of commemoration will serve as a platform to propel the adoption of policies and practices that promote awareness of sustainable energy use and foster global cooperation in energy transition efforts. The Panamanian delegate emphasized that transitioning to clean and renewable energy is imperative to confront current environmental and socioeconomic challenges while ensuring the well-being and survival of humanity on our planet.
Given that the energy sector contributes to over two-thirds of global emissions, the resolution’s importance cannot be overstated. However, it’s worth noting that concerns were raised regarding its omission of a more explicit link between energy and climate change, as well as its reference to “cleaner fossil fuel energies,” which some find problematic.
Clean energy’s fundamental principle is to generate power without inflicting negative environmental consequences, such as greenhouse gas emissions like carbon dioxide. A significant portion of clean energy is also renewable, encompassing wind power, certain hydro resources, and solar energy generation.

However, experts believe that efficient energy storage can balance these needs and provide power when it’s needed most. Substantial efforts are underway to bolster the infrastructure and storage capabilities of clean energy, with many experts asserting that clean renewables could fully replace fossil fuels by 2050.
