Pakistan is poised to embark on a transformative journey with the initiation of a groundbreaking project to establish 10,000 E-Rozgar centers nationwide, catering to the burgeoning community of freelancers and startups. Caretaker Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications, Dr Umar Saif, unveiled this ambitious initiative in a recent exclusive interview, shedding light on its potential to address the pressing challenges faced by 1.5 million freelancers lacking suitable workspaces.
According to a news report published on these pages, the need to equip freelancers with the essential tools and a conducive environment in the digital landscape cannot be overstated. Dr Umar Saif emphasized that the establishment of joint e-centers would not only empower freelancers but also attract investment, fostering new employment opportunities.
Encouraging youth to venture into entrepreneurship, Dr Umar Saif highlighted the lucrative prospects offered by E-Rozgar, where individuals can earn substantial stipends. Additionally, a parallel project set to commence on January 7 aims to introduce a standardized test for IT graduates through the Higher Education Commission. This initiative seeks to evaluate skills, providing internships to successful candidates. Dr Umar Saif emphasized the necessity of bridging the gap between the annual production of 75,000 IT graduates and the limited 3,000 employable by IT companies.
The impact of these initiatives extends beyond empowering individuals; they hold the potential to significantly boost the country’s exports. With the State Bank of Pakistan permitting IT companies to retain 50% of their receipts in dollar accounts, the government envisions a rise in exports to $4 billion.
