The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority (KPFS&HFA), under its Ramadan action plan against food adulteration, carried out a major crackdown in Peshawar, seizing 3,000 kilograms of dead and non-slaughtered chicken from Bacha Khan Chowk. An adulterated spice production unit was sealed, while expired and mislabeled beverages were confiscated from Hayatabad Industrial Estate.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of Director General Kashif Iqbal Jilani and Director Operations Muhammad Yousaf.
According to the Food Authority spokesperson, food safety teams raided a chicken shop at Bacha Khan Chowk where a large quantity of dead and non-slaughtered chicken was recovered.
The seized 3,000kg of chicken was disposed of at the Waste Services Peshawar (WSSP) dumping site in accordance with prescribed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The Spokesperson further added that during the same operation, a spice processing unit was inspected where adulteration was confirmed. The unit was sealed immediately, and samples of the spices were collected and sent for laboratory analysis.
In a separate action led by Deputy Director Peshawar Division Zeeshan Mehsud, food safety teams inspected beverage production units in Hayatabad Industrial Estate. The teams confiscated mislabeled food items, 200 liters of expired cold drinks, and 2,500 caps of renowned brands allegedly intended for fraudulent packaging.
The crackdown also extended to University Town, where canteens of various universities were inspected. Fines were imposed for violations of hygiene standards, and several improvement notices were issued to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
Director General Kashif Iqbal Jilani stated that strict and indiscriminate action would be taken under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety Act against those playing with human lives in the name of food. He reiterated that the provision of safe, quality, and halal food to the public would be ensured at all costs.
Kashif further added that special teams have been constituted under the pre-Ramadan and Ramadan action plan to intensify inspections of meat, poultry, spices, beverages, bakeries, and Iftar points across the province.
