Awami National Party (ANP) President Senator Aimal Wali Khan has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying the province has been “virtually abandoned,” with citizens left at the mercy of militants while those in power remain preoccupied with political affairs.
In a statement issued here on Thursday, Aimal Wali Khan said that four separate terrorist attacks took place across KP within the past 24 hours, resulting in the martyrdom of more than a dozen police personnel and civilians. He criticized the authorities for limiting their response to condemnation statements instead of taking effective action.
He said the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the police force were paying the price for failed state policies and the incompetence of the ruling governments. The ANP chief strongly condemned the attacks targeting police in Swat, Hangu, and Matani in Peshawar, as well as the quadcopter attack on a mosque in Waziristan. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims.
According to Aimal Wali Khan, these incidents demonstrate that the state has failed to establish its writ. He stressed that the responsibility of governments extends beyond issuing statements of condemnation and requires practical measures to eliminate terrorism.
The ANP president alleged that the provincial government was focused on political rallies seeking the release of a convicted prisoner, while the federal government was concentrating on the elections in Kashmir. Meanwhile, he said, the people of KP and Balochistan continued to suffer from worsening insecurity as political leaders prioritized their own interests.
He further stated that the absence of a clear national policy against terrorism had forced the people of KP and Balochistan to bear the consequences. He accused the rulers of incompetence, indifference, and a lack of seriousness, arguing that these shortcomings had allowed militant groups to reorganize. He also claimed that the interests of the province and Balochistan were being sacrificed for external agendas.
Warning that the security situation could deteriorate further if the state failed to fulfill its responsibilities, Aimal Wali Khan said the current rulers would bear responsibility for any worsening of the situation.
Reaffirming the ANP’s longstanding position, he said the party had always maintained a clear stance against terrorism. “The Awami National Party is the first line of resistance against every attempt to occupy this land. We are the true heirs of this soil, which is why terrorists and their facilitators see us as a threat,” he said.
ANP had never surrendered to terrorism in the past and would not do so now, adding that the party would continue its struggle for peace, democracy, and the protection of the Pashtun homeland at all costs, he added.
