An extreme press

As we observe the Press Freedom Day, It is more crucial for the world nations to reflect on the state of media freedom and the role of the press in highlighting the truth, which, unfortunately, often gets buried under a barrage of misinformation and propaganda. In recent years, Pakistan has faced numerous challenges regarding freedom of the press. According to the Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) Press Freedom Index 2021, Pakistan ranks 145th out of 180 countries, highlighting the dire situation of press freedom in the country. Journalists face numerous threats, including physical violence, intimidation and censorship.
The problem is not just limited to Pakistan; globally, journalists face tremendous risks while reporting the truth. From being jailed and tortured to being murdered, journalists often risk their lives to bring us the truth. Unfortunately, their work is often undermined by powerful interests that seek to control the narrative.
Zeroing in on what has been characterized as “an extreme press” during the recent annual dinner of White House Correspondents’ Association, President Joe Biden has taken a jab at the news outlets, saying they used “lies told for profit and power” to stir up hatred.
The rise of social media has had a profound impact on our society, connecting people across the globe and facilitating the spread of information at an unprecedented rate. However, this proliferation of information has also had a downside: it has become increasingly difficult to discern the truth from fiction.
One of the main reasons for this is the lack of regulation on social media platforms. Unlike traditional media outlets, social media companies are not subject to the same standards and regulations that govern the accuracy and impartiality of news reporting. This means that anyone can post anything on social media, regardless of whether it is true or not. The consequences of blurring of the truth either on the traditional media or the social media can be far-reaching. Misinformation and disinformation can influence public opinion, undermine trust in institutions and even have real-world consequences, such as in the case of vaccine hesitancy or political polarization. This can prove lethal for populations who may be more susceptible to misinformation or may lack access to accurate information.
It is essential to recognize the importance of a free press in a democratic society. The press serves as a watchdog, holding those in power accountable and keeping the public informed. Without a free and independent press, we risk losing sight of the truth, allowing those in power to act with impunity. On this World Press Freedom Day, we must reiterate our commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists. Governments and civil society must work together to ensure that journalists are free to do their work without fear of reprisal. We must recognize that the truth is a fundamental pillar of democracy, and a free press is essential to uncovering it. Let us stand together in support of press freedom and the brave journalists who risk their lives to bring us the truth.
