The Awami National Party (ANP) on Thursday demanded a transparent investigation into the boat capsizing incident at a lake in Swat, which claimed the lives of seven members of a family, and questioned the safety measures in place at tourist destinations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a statement, ANP Khyber Pakhtunkhwa spokesperson Arsalan Khan Nazim expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
He said the loss of seven members of a single family was heartbreaking and raised serious concerns about the performance of the district administration, relevant departments and the provincial government.
Nazim said that despite a major incident in Swat last year, the authorities had failed to introduce a permanent and effective safety mechanism, alleging that only temporary measures had been taken in the aftermath of the previous tragedy.
He said the government and relevant institutions were responsible for ensuring strict implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) governing tourism activities, adding that proper safety arrangements and effective monitoring could help prevent such incidents.
The ANP leader called for an immediate and transparent inquiry into the incident and demanded strict action against those found responsible for negligence.
He said KP’s natural beauty and tourist attractions played a vital role in the provincial economy and the livelihoods of local communities, but recurring tragedies were damaging the province’s image as a tourist destination.
Mr Nazim urged the provincial government to strengthen safety arrangements, improve basic facilities, enhance rescue services and ensure effective monitoring at tourist sites to prevent similar incidents in future.
