Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi’s Fine Art Committee organized a thought-provoking session and art exhibition, “Curatorial Confessions,” focusing on the art of painting. The event featured insights from Fine Art Committee Chairman Farrukh Shahab, artists M. Zeeshan, Faraz Siddiqui (Karachiwala), and Umaina Khan, while the session was moderated by Shamama Hasnay.
Speaking on the occasion, Farrukh Shahab reflected on the transformation in the art of world over the past four decades. “Forty years ago, the concept of a creator was very different from what it is today.
The environment was more about mentorship, and there was no digital media. Access to information wasn’t as easy as it is now,” he said.
He reminisced about the days of the Sindh Art Exhibition and shared experiences from the World Culture Festival, where he had the opportunity to learn from young creative artists from around the world.
“A creator is, in many ways, like a director,” He added. He also appreciated Arts Council President Muhammad Ahmed Shah for his continuous efforts in promoting art and culture.
Artist M. Zeeshan emphasized the importance of awareness in an artist’s life. “An artist must always keep their eyes open. Everything visible to them can be a medium.
From materials used in art to lighting—even the gallery setting—everything holds significance,” He noted. He humorously remarked that artists have a habit of continuing their work until the very last moment.
Faraz Siddiqui highlighted the importance of networking and organizing in any exhibition. “I enjoy challenges. If an artist is not satisfied with their work, they try to improve, and many succeed. Only a fellow artist can truly understand the value of their work,” He said.
Umaina Khan stressed the need to take art beyond gallery walls. “An artist’s work shouldn’t be confined to art galleries. The public should also be made aware of art so they can form their own opinions,” she remarked.
The session concluded with attendees visiting the Ahmed Pervez Art Gallery, where they admired the display of sketching, drawing, and painting works, appreciating the creative expressions showcased in the exhibition.
