The Provincial Cabinet Standing Committee met on Tuesday to discuss the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Marriage Restraint Bill 2019. The meeting, chaired by KP Law Minister Advocate Aftab Alam, focused on reviewing the proposed legislation and gathering feedback from committee members.
Law Minister Aftab Alam emphasized that child marriage is a sensitive issue deeply linked to religious and Islamic teachings. He stated that the Bill should be referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) for further review and recommendations before any legislative progress is made.
Provincial Minister for Social Welfare and Women Development Syed Qasim Ali Shah, Advocate General KP Shah Faisal Utmankhel , and other officials were also present at the meeting. Officials from the relevant department briefed participants on the key provisions of the Bill and its potential impact.
The proposed legislation aims to set stricter legal measures to curb child marriages in the province. However, previous attempts to pass similar legislation have faced opposition from religious groups. The decision to involve the CII suggests that the government is seeking religious validation to ensure broader acceptance of the law.
