As part of its Science Popularization activities, Pakistan Science Foundation organized a popular science lecture on “Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray for COVID-19 Treatment and Breath Test for COVID19 Diagnosis” by Dr. Isaac John, Additional Director, Research & Development, Ashrod and St. Peter’s Hospitals, NHS Foundation Trust, UK at PSF Auditorium. A large number of students, researchers and academicians from Quaid-e-Azam University, NUST and other S&T organizations participated in the lecture.
While addressing the audience, the Chairman, PSF Prof. Dr. Shahid Mahmood Baig, S.I, welcomed the guests and highlighted various activities of the Foundation carried out for promotion of science in the country. He emphasized on importance of science and technology for socio economic development of Pakistan.
The speaker, Dr. Isaac John threw light on COVID-19, precautionary measures regarding its spread and importance of vaccination for its treatment. He introduced a relatively new method for treatment of COVID-19 and its later variants namely the use of Nitric Oxide Nasal Spray (NONS) and Breath Test for its diagnosis and explained the mechanism of action of newly developed Nasal Spray.
The NONS particularly acts at two stages. At first stage, if used before COVID-19 infection, it reduces the chances of the entry and replication of virus inside the respiratory tract. Whereas, at the second stage, if effected patients use the spray, it encapsulates the virus and inhibit its replication or action ultimately reducing the chances of infection.
While elaborating the mode of action, Dr. John stated that the trials of the spray have been conducted on 80 patients in St. Peters Hospital, London and the efficacy of this newly developed Nasal Spray has been found exceptional against the COVID-19 and its other variants.
The participants showed keen interest in the lecture and posed a number of questions at the end of the session. The lecture ended with a vote of thanks and group photo of the participants with speakers and other guests.
