Euro 2020 group stage has boiled down to the final matchday.
Eight teams have so far clinched qualification for the Round of 16 as group winners and runner-ups: Italy, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, England and Croatia. Switzerland and Czech Republic have already qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.
Sweden and France are also assured of progression but will have to play their final group games before being classified.
Meanwhile, numerous giants still fighting it out to make it out of the group stages. Spain are yet to confirm qualification while Portugal and Germany are locked in an epic battle in Group F aka the group of death. There are six groups with four teams each at Euro 2020.
All six group winners and six runner-ups qualify automatically for the Round of 16. The remaining four spots will be filled by the four best teams out of the six third-placed teams.
In case multiple teams in a group are level on points, head-to-head record will be used to break the tie. If the teams are still level, goal difference will come into play.
So far, Italy, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Austria, England and Croatia. Switzerland and Czech Republic have already qualified as one of the best third-placed teams.
Portugal, Ukraine, Finland and Spain are the other third-placed teams with Portugal and Spain remaining one game each un-played. Thus, having a much brighter chance to qualify for the next round.
Following are the rules for the third placed teams of respective groups to qualify:
Points
2) Goal difference
3) Goals scored
4) Wins
5) lower disciplinary points total
6) European Qualifiers overall ranking
A draw or a win against France in their final group game will see Portugal qualify for the Round of 16. In case Portugal lose to France, they will finish third in the group. But since they already have a better goal difference than Finland and Ukraine (both of whom have played their group stage matches), Portugal will all but qualify as one of the best-third placed teams, subject to their goal difference.
They must ensure they don’t lose to France by more than a two-goal margin. In such a case, they will definitely qualify to the Round of 16 regardless of the result of matches in Group D and E.
If they lose by a three goal margin or more, then they will have to depend on results in Group E.
