Mental health experts have warned that excessive late-night mobile phone use, sleep deprivation, energy drinks, banned substances and other harmful habits are increasingly contributing to addiction and psychological problems among young people.
The experts also identified excessive social media use, inflation, unemployment, political uncertainty, domestic issues and social and economic pressures as major factors behind rising cases of depression, anxiety, irritability and other mental health disorders.
A ceremony and awareness walk were organised in Peshawar by the Peshawar Mental Health Care Centre Welfare Organization in connection with World Mental Health Day on July 22.
The event was attended by prominent psychiatrists and mental health professionals, who discussed the causes of mental illnesses, ways to maintain psychological well-being and preventive measures.
The ceremony was chaired by Dr Ghazan Khan, Chief Executive of the Peshawar Mental Health Care Organization and a senior psychiatrist.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Zalanda Sifat Khan, Dr Tashfeen Sadaf, Nida Taj and Professor Dr Shafiullah said mental health disorders were no longer limited to older age groups, adding that depression, anxiety, anger and behavioural problems were increasingly affecting younger generations.
Dr Ghazan Khan said excessive consumption of certain energy drinks was having harmful effects on the mental health of young people. He noted that lack of sleep, aggression, frustration, anger, irritability and impatience were becoming more common due to unhealthy lifestyles and the increased use of chemically enhanced beverages and other harmful substances.
He said World Mental Health Day provided an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mental well-being, urging people to adopt healthier routines, maintain a balanced lifestyle, avoid unnecessary stress and stay away from substances that could negatively affect physical and psychological health.
The experts stressed the need for greater public awareness, early identification of mental health problems and support systems to help individuals cope with psychological challenges.
The event concluded with an awareness walk, where participants expressed their commitment to promoting mental health awareness and encouraging preventive measures for a healthier society.
