Four alleged robbers were shot dead in a ‘police encounter’ in the Chamkani Police Station area of the provincial capital on Saturday, police said.
According to officials, the slain men were members of an inter-district gang of robbers that had been active across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for nearly two decades, posing a serious threat to law enforcement agencies.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Ghafoor alias Ghafoor, Shahpur, Javed, and Samiullah.
According to police, the gang was involved in numerous armed robberies in the provincial capital and other districts while disguising themselves in police and Frontier Corps (FC) uniforms.
The group had allegedly looted cash and jewelry worth millions of rupees from the residence of a doctor’s family in Peshawar on August 26.
Taking notice of the incident, CCPO Peshawar Dr. Mian Saeed Ahmed reviewed the case and ordered the immediate arrest of the individuals involved in the heinous crime.
Police officials claimed that acting on intelligence received early Saturday morning, Chamkani police received credible information that the gang members were present in Mehr Gul Kalay, Tarnab Farm.
When the police team reached the area, the dacoits opened fire. Police retaliated, resulting in the killing of all four gang members during the encounter.
Police also recovered from their possession one Kalashnikov rifle, 223 bore rifle, two 30-bore pistols, a ladder, and two motorcycles.
Police sources revealed that the gang had been operating since 2003, carrying out a series of robberies in different localities of the provincial capital and other districts of the province.
