The Green Climate Fund (GCF), the world’s largest climate fund supporting developing countries to combat Climate change challenges, has approved $250 million for Glaciers to Farms, a major climate adaptation program led by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support communities in glacier-fed regions including Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to a press release issued by ADB, the initiative, part of a $3.5 billion regional effort, will focus on improving irrigation, water storage, and watershed management to help farmers cope with shrinking glaciers, changing rainfall, and more frequent floods and droughts.
In Swat, where thousands depend on glacier-fed rivers for farming and daily life, the program aims to boost crop productivity, strengthen early warning systems, and improve access to climate-resilient farming tools.
“This program will build long-term resilience and protect lives and livelihoods,” said Yasmin Siddiqi, ADB’s Director for Agriculture and Rural Development.
Overall, the program will benefit around 13 million people across nine countries, helping communities secure their water and food sources in the face of a changing climate.
