ISLAMABAD
Kashmiris worldwide, including those on both sides of the Line of Control, will observe India’s Republic Day tomorrow as Black Day in protest against New Delhi’s ongoing refusal to grant the Kashmiri people their UN-mandated right to self-determination.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) called for the observance of Black Day, which will be marked by a complete shutdown in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, along with anti-India demonstrations and rallies in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan and major world capitals.
The aim is to send a strong message to the international community that Kashmiris view India as a violator of their fundamental rights and believe it has no legitimacy to celebrate the day in the territory. Each year, January 26 brings heightened difficulties for Kashmiris, as Indian forces intensify security measures across the region.
This year is no exception. Roads leading to venues in the Kashmir Valley and Jammu region, where official Republic Day events are scheduled, have been sealed with barbed wire, while drones are being deployed to restrict public movement.
Indian paramilitary and police personnel, supported by sniffer dogs, are conducting surprise vehicle checks and frisking residents at entry and exit points in Srinagar and other cities and towns of the occupied territory.
Meanwhile, through statements, messages, and posters displayed in Srinagar and other areas of the Kashmir Valley, people have urged a complete boycott of all Indian official celebrations.
Posters calling for the boycott have been visible in various parts of the territory over the past week, reinforcing the appeal ahead of India’s Republic Day.
