Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Secretary General Muhammad Humayun Khan has expressed serious concern over alleged irregularities in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, saying the accusations of rigging have raised serious questions over the transparency of the democratic process.
In a statement issued here Humayun Khan said the PPP would not accept what he termed an attack on the public mandate and would pursue the matter on all constitutional and legal forums.
He said the alleged electoral irregularities reported in the Mirpur Division had raised several serious questions, demanding that the Election Commission provide answers and conduct a transparent inquiry.
The PPP leader called for withholding results in constituencies where concrete evidence of irregularities existed and demanded an immediate, impartial investigation.
He said the party had always struggled for the sanctity of votes, democracy, and supremacy of the Constitution, adding that protecting the people’s mandate remained its foremost responsibility.
“The results should reflect the choice of voters, and no one should be allowed to alter the public mandate,” he said. Humayun Khan said ignoring concerns over the AJK electoral process by arguing that “it is too late now” would be against democratic values.
He added that the PPP was not a party that would leave the field and would use every constitutional and legal avenue to safeguard the people’s vote.
He further demanded recounting at polling stations in Mirpur Division where evidence of unusual results and irregularities had emerged.
“Democracy is not just about holding elections; it is about respecting voters’ choices, ensuring transparent results, and protecting the public mandate,” he said.
Humayun Khan stressed that safeguarding the right to vote of the people of Azad Kashmir was the responsibility of all political parties and institutions, adding that transparent elections were essential to restoring public confidence in democracy.
