DLP Report
PESHAWAR
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) (JUI-F) Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) on Monday submitted a call attention notice in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly secretariat.
In the call attention notice, the lawmaker raised serious concerns about the severe overcrowding on BRT buses in Peshawar. The notice highlighted the difficulties faced by commuters, especially women, who are reportedly subjected to harassment, and pushing and shoving on a daily basis due to the high passenger volume.
The party’s notice further called on the provincial government to address these issues by increasing the number of buses and lifting the restrictions on express routes, particularly during school hours and at night, when the closure of these routes leads to additional problems for the public.
In response, Provincial Special Assistant for Transport, Rangrez Khan, addressed the concerns, stating that individuals engaging in inappropriate behavior are promptly arrested.
He also argued that the term “harassment” was not appropriate in this context. Regarding the overcrowding, Khan pointed out that the BRT currently operates 244 buses on 18 routes and emphasized that the department is planning to purchase additional buses to further ease the situation.
The debate underscored the growing demand for more effective measures to improve the BRT service and ensure a safer and more comfortable commuting experience for all passengers, particularly women.
