Pakistan Pavilion in Davos became the epicenter of inspiration as the Karachi Council of Foreign Relations Swiss Asian Chamber of Commerce (KCFR-SACC) arranged the ‘Inspiring Pakistan Lunch’ on the 16th Jan, 2024. This exclusive event brought together an illustrious panel of speakers, each weaving a unique narrative that showcased the rich tapestry of Pakistan’s culture, resilience, and transformative journey on the global stage.
Introduced by Haya Sehgal the event served as a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Pakistan Pavilion at the World Economic Forum (WEF). The distinguished lineup of speakers included Arif Anis MBE, Dr. Amjad Saqib, Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, Ambassador Ayesha Ali, Syed Ali Naseer, Maj Gen Tabassum Habib, Dr. Tariq Malik, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh and Ikram Sehgal.
Arif Anis MBE, a renowned author and keynote speaker, took the stage to express gratitude for the platform provided by Ikram Sehgal. His address explored the inspirational stories emerging from Pakistan, emphasizing the resilience demonstrated by its people, particularly amid the economic challenges posed by the global pandemic. In the face of adversity amidst Covid-19, Arif Anis and his two friends shared a vision to mobilize efforts to enhance Pakistan’s image during challenging times. Their initiatives aim was to provide 1 million free meals to frontline workers combating the COVID-19 crisis. Applauding their impactful work, renowned figure David Beckham acknowledges their dedication and the QUEEN decorated all three with the MBE commendation.
Dr. Amjad Saqib, Chairman of BISP spoke next. He is the Founder of Akhuwat Foundation, the largest interest-free microfinance program in the world which has disbursed over Rs. 200 billion to around 6 million poor families in Pakistan and has launched Pakistans first free Akhuwat College University that is open to talented students of impoverished families from all provinces, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Dr. Amjad Saqib illuminated the audience with a reflection on Pakistan’s breathtaking landscapes. His narrative painted a picture of hope and justice, underlining the pivotal role BISP plays in supporting females and underprivileged households across Pakistan.
Gulmina Bilal Ahmad, the Executive Director of Individualland, discussed the evolving narrative of Pakistan with her perspective focusing on the resilience of the Pakistani people, particularly women, and the transformative power of cultural diversity. Gulmina Bilal Ahmad’s rich experience in peacebuilding and youth engagement underscored the positive changes occurring in Pakistan and how they are shaping a more resilient and inspiring nation.
Ambassador Ayesha Ali, currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to Prague, Czech Republic, emphasized women’s empowerment in her address. Drawing from her extensive diplomatic career, she spoke about breaking stereotypes and promoting gender equality. Ambassador Ali highlighted her initiatives to streamline women’s participation in decision-making processes and employment opportunities, showcasing the progressive strides being made for women in Pakistan.
Syed Ali Naseer, Chief Data & Strategy Officer of Jazz, shared insights into Pakistan’s digital landscape. His presentation touched upon the potential and opportunities in digitalization, emphasizing the transformative impact on freelancers, digital sacredness, and internet users in Pakistan. Ali Naseer’s perspective highlighted the role of technology in shaping Pakistan’s future and contributing to its global presence.
Maj Gen Tabassum Habib, Director General of SIFC delved into Pakistan’s global connectivity, economic optimization, and the role of the military in shaping the nation’s narrative. His insights shed light on how Pakistan is a connecting hub, linking major powers and contributing to global conversations. He also emphasized that this notion of connection is very wide and different (could be Geo-Political, Economic or Societal Connection).
Dr. Tariq Malik, a consultant World Bank and Former Chairman Nadra discussed the inspirational narrative of Pakistan, highlighting the roots of Pakistan’s existence, emphasizing the inclusive vision laid down by its founders. Dr. Malik’s insights into digital transformation, particularly his work on Digital ID showcased Pakistan’s commitment to leveraging technology for development and inclusivity.
Ambassador Rizwan Saeed Sheikh presently Additional Foreign Secretary MOFA, reflected on the rich history of the country, acknowledging the resilience that has seen Pakistan through various challenges, from corruption to terrorism. Ambassador Sheikh commended Haya Sehgal’s book, ‘Resilient Pakistan,’ as a fitting tribute to the nation.
Co-Chairman Pathfinder Group, Ikram Sehgal concluded the event with a personal story that emphasized connectivity, resilience, and cultural diversity. His narrative encapsulated the essence of the ‘Inspiring Pakistan Lunch’ and expressed gratitude to all attendees for their valuable contributions to Pakistan’s growth.
Given Pakistan’s rich narrative, diversity, and resilience on the global platform the ‘Inspiring Pakistan Lunch’ at Davos set against the backdrop of the World Economic Forum symbolized the convergence of ideas and collaborations that will continue to shape Pakistan’s narrative in the years to come.
