Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Khan Gandapur has termed the launch of the province’s first Carbon Asset Inventory, as a historic step toward environmental sustainability and economic resilience.
A Carbon Asset inventory is a detailed accounting of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It also identifies, quantifies, and records all sources of emission.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, the Chief Minister said the initiative reflects the provincial government’s commitment to aligning with global climate goals and adopting a market-based approach to sustainable development.
“The launch of the carbon asset inventory marks a significant milestone. It demonstrates that KP is ready to participate in the global carbon economy and lead the way in green energy solutions,” said CM Gandapur.
The carbon asset inventory was developed through the collaboration between the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) and the Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED) program. The inventory provides a comprehensive mapping of PEDO’s renewable energy projects and establishes a baseline of carbon emissions savings, which can be quantified and potentially monetized through access to international carbon markets.
“This tool will open doors to global renewable energy markets and lay the foundation for promoting climate financing within the province,” Gandapur stated, emphasizing that climate financing opportunities will be fully utilized to drive green energy initiatives forward.
He also noted that integrating this process into the province’s long-term development strategy is a priority. “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa holds special potential in renewable energy. Multiple projects under PEDO are underway, and several more are in the pipeline,” he added.
Referring to the recent agreement between PEDO and the Private Energy Transition (PET), the Chief Minister called it a “milestone” that will enable the province to harness its renewable energy capacity effectively for economic stability.
“Economic self-reliance and environmental sustainability are among our core priorities. We are focusing on developing all sectors with untapped potential to ensure the holistic growth of the province,” CM Gandapur concluded.
