Khyber Pakhtunkhwa minister for elementary and secondary education Faisal Tarkai stated that while peaceful protest is a right, closing schools and disrupting students’ education is unlawful.
In a statement issued here on Thursday minister Tarakai expressed concern over reports of some teachers sending students home and making videos as part of their protest.
“There will be no compromise on students’ education,” Tarakai said, appealing to teachers to end the protest and address issues collaboratively.
He emphasized that the government was prepared for negotiations if teachers withdraw their protest call, and has already agreed to consider all legitimate demands.
He explained that the delay in upgrading teachers’ positions was due to economic constraints but assured that solutions will be sought over time.
A committee has been established to address teachers’ concerns, and mentioned that the government previously invited teachers to discuss these issues directly with the Chief Minister.
Despite provincial government attempts for negotiation, the primary schoolteachers continued their protest and sit-in in the provincial capital for the third day. The protest has been called by All Primary Teachers Association (APTA) to press the government to upgrade PST cader.
The president of the APTA Azizullah Khan told reporters that their sit-in in Peshawar would continue till the acceptance of their demand regarding upgradation.
He claimed over 26,000 primary schools across KP would remain closed till their demand was fulfilled.
