The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Saturday rejected reports circulating on social media regarding the alleged abduction of provincial lawmaker Asif Khan Mehsud, terming them “baseless, fabricated and contrary to the facts.”
In a statement, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Home and Tribal Affairs Tariq Saeed Marwat said there was no truth to the reports claiming that the member of the provincial assembly had been abducted.
He said Mr Mehsud was currently present at his native village, where he was at his hujra, and was safe and in good health.
Mr Marwat urged the public not to pay heed to rumours and unverified information circulating on social media and appealed to citizens to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports.
He warned that strict legal action would be taken, in accordance with the law, against those found involved in spreading false information aimed at creating panic and anxiety among the public.
The special assistant added that a report had been sought from the relevant authorities to establish the facts and ensure appropriate action.
