PESHAWAR
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has acquired 52 new buses for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to expand its fleet, improve passenger services and launch a dedicated Pink Bus service for women, officials said on Monday.
According to TransPeshawar official statement, the new buses are ready for shipment to Pakistan under the directives of Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi as part of efforts to strengthen the BRT network and cater to the city’s growing transport needs.
With the arrival of the new vehicles, the total strength of the BRT fleet will increase from 244 to 296 buses. Officials said the first batch of 25 buses is expected to reach Pakistan in early July, while the remaining buses will arrive in subsequent consignments.
The additional buses will be deployed on both the BRT’s main corridor and feeder routes, increasing operational capacity, reducing waiting times and improving service reliability for commuters.
A key feature of the fleet expansion is the introduction of a Pink Bus service for women. Under the initiative, designated buses will be reserved exclusively for female passengers during peak hours to provide a safer, more comfortable and convenient travel environment.
TransPeshawar also announced plans to introduce new routes to extend quality public transport services to more areas of the provincial capital.
Officials said the expansion of the fleet reflects the organisation’s commitment to enhancing urban mobility and meeting the increasing transportation needs of Peshawar’s residents under the guidance of its Board of Directors, Secretary Transport Muhammad Zubair, and Managing Director of the KP Urban Mobility Authority Iftikhar Khan.
