PDMA urges caution

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Wednesday said that heavy rains and flash floods since July 19 had claimed 18 lives and injured 19 people across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the authority, the deceased included seven men, three women and eight children, while the injured comprised 11 men, four women and four children. The PDMA said 30 houses were damaged in rain-related incidents, including 23 partially damaged and seven completely destroyed.
The casualties and property damage were reported from Peshawar, Nowshera, Khyber, Mardan, Buner, Bajaur, Shangla, Swabi, Lower Chitral, Lower and Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Torghar, Kurram, and North water levels in all major rivers and streams across the province remained within the normal range despite the and South Waziristan districts.
The authority said the PDMA, Rescue 1122, district administrations and other relevant departments were coordinating relief operations in the affected areas.
It said district administrations had been directed to expedite relief activities and ensure the early provision of assistance and relief goods to affected families.
The PDMA said water levels in all major rivers and streams across the province remained within the normal range despite the ongoing spell of rains.
It added that intermittent heavy rainfall was likely to continue until July 23 and that all district administrations had already been placed on alert to deal with any emergency.
The authority advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from vulnerable tourist destinations and strictly follow official weather advisories.
The PDMA’s Emergency Operations Centre remains fully operational, and citizens have been advised to report emergencies or seek weather-related information through the authority’s toll-free helpline, 1700.
