NAB completes inquiry into alleged irregularities in Billion Tree Project

NAB-KP sought chairman approval to convert the inquiry into reference, sources

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (NAB-KP) completed one of the ongoing seven inquiries related to alleged irregularities in the Billion Tree Tsunami Project.

The Billion Tree Tsunami Project was an ambitious tree plantation program of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) government in KP.

The project was launched in 2014 by the PTI provincial government and completed in 2017.

According to sources, the provincial NAB office has sent the inquiry report to the Chairman seeking an approval to convert the report into a reference and if approved it will be filed in the accountability court.

It may be mentioned here that in 2020, the NAB in its Executive Board Meeting (EBM) decided to probe the PTI government mega project and it was unanimously decided to conduct different investigations against KP forest department and other relevant authorities of the provincial government.

Additionally, the NAB KP has also set up a joint investigation team for this important case and inquiries, which also includes Forest department officers.

The NAB team has collected all the details regarding the Billion Tree project from Chitral to Dera Ismail Khan.

The process of procurement of plants for the said project and the financial cost of the project has been made part of the investigation.

According to sources, the NAB KP team has completed the inquiry and investigation regarding the Billion Tree project in the southern districts.

The sources said that if the inquiry report approved for the reference, some officials may face interrogation and even arrest for further probe in the project.

NAB KP has also launched an inquiry against a provincial minister while it is also investigating the alleged corruption and irregularities in several government departments and autonomous institutions in the province.
