Over 10,000 under-trial prisoners held in KP jails

The Prisons Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has released fresh statistics revealing that a total of 10,216 under-trial prisoners are currently lodged in 35 jails across the province.
According to the data, the under-trial population includes 9,739 male prisoners, 124 female prisoners, and 353 juveniles, comprising 351 boys and two girls.
The statistics show that Peshawar Central Jail has the highest number of under-trial prisoners, with 2,226 inmates, followed by Mardan Jail with 1,658.
Other major jails include Bannu with 578 under-trial prisoners, Swat 537, Abbottabad 457, Kohat 428, Charsadda 411, Nowshera 403, Haripur and Dasu Kohistan with 400 each, and Mansehra with 393.
Further figures reveal that DI Khan Jail houses 303 under-trial prisoners, Swabi 314, Lower Dir 277, Lakki Marwat 271, Malakand 151, Bara 149, Jamrud 123, Hangu Jail 117, Chitral 94, Landi Kotal 77, Parachinar 74, Karam Sadda 66, Battagram 61, Tank 61, Bajaur Khar 33, Upper Dir 32, Mohmand Ghalnai 20, Shangla 18, and Miran Shah Sub-Jail nine under-trial prisoners.
The report also notes that there are no under-trial prisoners in several sub-jails, including Mohmand, Bajaur, Orakzai, North Waziristan, South Waziristan, and the Tank Sub-Jail in South Waziristan.
The data highlights the heavy burden on major jails in the province and underscores the growing number of under-trial prisoners awaiting the conclusion of their cases in courts across the province.
