ISLAMABAD: In a historic diplomatic milestone, Pakistan has appointed its first-ever Ambassador to Armenia. Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan, who currently serves as Pakistan’s envoy to the United Arab Emirates, presented his credentials to the President of Armenia, formally assuming the role as Pakistan’s non-resident Ambassador to Yerevan. This symbolic yet significant move marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan-Armenia relations. The decision to establish ties with Armenia was not taken in isolation. Pakistan consulted closely with its allies Azerbaijan and Türkiye before moving forward. Only after receiving their consent did Islamabad decide to normalize relations with Yerevan. For decades, Pakistan refrained from appointing an envoy to Armenia due to its unwavering support for Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Pakistan was one of the strongest backers of Baku during the 44-day Patriotic War, which saw Azerbaijan reclaim territories previously under Armenian control. This history explains why the announcement has surprised some observers, who question the timing and rationale behind the move. At present, the step remains largely symbolic. No major diplomatic or economic activity is expected in the immediate future. Armenia has yet to nominate its own ambassador to Pakistan, which critics point to as evidence that the relationship is still one-sided.
