Overpricing of commodities in Balochistan irks PM: Sharif stresses need to provide relief to masses
ISLAMABAD
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Pakistan greatly values its relations with the European Union (EU), which are based on shared values and common objectives of peace, prosperity and development, and wants to further cement trade and investment ties.
The prime minister expressed these views while talking to EU President Ursula von der Leyen who made a telephone call to him and congratulated him on assuming the office of the prime minister.
The prime minister thanked for the felicitations and highlighted the importance of closer trade and investment ties between Pakistan and the European Commission. He appreciated the GSP Plus arrangement and underlined that, being a mutually beneficial scheme, it has played an important role in expansion of Pakistan-EU trade.
During the conversation, Ursula von der Leyen underlined the European Commission’s desire to further strengthen bilateral relationship with Pakistan.
The two leaders agreed to stay in contact and work together to expand Pakistan-EU relations, intensify investment and trade cooperation, and enhance mutual cooperation between the two sides in diverse fields.
The prime minister lauded Ursula von der Leyen’s stewardship of the EU Commission and underscored his resolve to further deepen mutual engagement. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended a cordial invitation to the European Commission President.
Separately, the prime minister has directed the federal minister for industries and national food security to immediately reach Balochistan while expressing his displeasure at the overpricing of daily commodities and lack of its supply in the province.
He said that selling of daily use items at high price other than fixed by the official price rates is a crime which will not be tolerated at any cost.
Prime Minister Sharif during his visit to Balochistan province on Saturday (today) will also review implementation of a special relief package announced for the holy month of Ramazan. Upon the direction of the prime minister, a special Ramazan relief package was announced two days back.
Meanwhile, talking to MQM leader Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Friday, Prime Minister Sharif emphasised on working together to resolve problems facing the country at this point. He said that it is the need of the hour to go beyond political interests and provide relief to the people.
Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui assured the prime minister of MQM’s full support in resolving the issues.
