The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) alert for upper districts of the province after a new spell of westerly winds was forecast to bring rain and strong winds.
PDMA warned that the weather conditions have heightened the risk of glacial lake outbursts, triggering flash floods and landslides in Chitral Upper and Lower, Swat, Dir Upper, Kohistan Upper and Mansehra, among other northern districts.
The authority has directed district administrations to keep continuous surveillance of sensitive glacial sites and ensure early warning systems remain operational. Residents and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement near streams and rivers.
PDMA instructed people living in low-lying areas to remain alert and move to safer locations in case of an emergency. District administrations were told to conduct emergency drills, keep evacuation centres functional and ensure the availability of rescue personnel.
The public has been urged to immediately relocate to safe areas if they notice sudden changes in water flow, mud or unusual sounds of stones. PDMA also directed that livestock and essential goods be shifted to higher ground and community alert systems be kept active.
Relevant agencies including NHA, FWO and C&W have been asked to take preemptive measures to deal with possible road blockages.
