The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved 16 development projects worth more than Rs25 billion in a bid to promote balanced development across the province, with a particular focus on improving road connectivity, education, water and sanitation, forestry, social welfare and land records.
The projects were approved at the fourth meeting of the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP), held on the special directives of Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Khan Afridi.
The meeting was chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Isam Zeb and attended by members of the PDWP and senior officials of the departments concerned, said a handout.
A major portion of the approved schemes relates to road infrastructure in different districts. The projects include improvement and widening of the 13-kilometre Gatkai-Latai blacktop road in Bajaur; construction and feasibility study of a 43-kilometre road linking N-55 with the Torkham Road in the merged districts; and construction and blacktopping of a new road from Sarkai to Shin Kamar via Chargi, Dagri and Kamar Khel Adda.
Other approved road schemes include improvement of the 35-kilometre Tandal Baghora-Wali Masjid road; improvement, widening and construction of the Tangi-Sarki Kumah-Kachkolol Kali road in Bara subdivision; construction of a 10-kilometre road from Kacha Bachak-Merakhail to Shegi Machan Khel in Bannu; and rehabilitation and construction of the Bakht Bulanda-Attock-Nagrai Payeen-Pangral-Shati Chinar-Kano Gambat-Zawal Baba-Hajiabad route.
The PDWP also approved a survey, detailed design and feasibility study for the Tribal Institute of Applied and Modern Sciences in Jamrud, Khyber district.
Under the KP Rural Investment and Institutional Support Project, water supply and sanitation schemes were approved for Jamrud in Khyber district, Sadda-Sateen in Kurram district and Bara in Khyber district.
In the forestry sector, the forum approved assessment, feasibility study and rehabilitation of endangered stone tree species.
An agriculture-related scheme, the Gomal Zam Dam Command Area Development and On-Farm Water Management Project, supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), was also approved.
The approved social welfare schemes include establishment of Darul Aman facilities in Chitral and Bannu, while the Board of Revenue’s second phase of computerisation of land records in the remaining districts of the province was also given the go-ahead.
In the higher education sector, the PDWP approved a project for the University of Engineering and Applied Sciences Swat. It also approved the first phase of the Chief Minister’s Model Schools programme in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the elementary and secondary education sector.
