PESHAWAR
To observe World Habitat Day, World Wide Fund (WWF) on Monday organized an event at National Incubation Center Peshawar.
The event was attended by the director Peshawar Zoo Muhammad Niaz, director north WWF Haider Raza, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa head for WWF Muhammad Waseem, deputy director environmental protection agency Dr Habib, Sarhad Conservation Convener Dr Adil Zarif, social activist Aisha Idrees and others.
Speaking on this occasion, speakers highlighted the importance and fundamental role of Peshawar city in the revival of regional economy and development. They also shed light over ever-increasing risks posed by unsustainable population growth, environmental changes, natural disasters and global epidemics to the development of the Peshawar city.
They called upon the government and all relevant stakeholders that everyone in the city has the basic right to have a habitat and a house of their own. The state of the house, the atmosphere it was living in and the environment that surrounds us has a lot of contribution in the development and prosperity of the city.
It is pertinent to mention that every year; World Habitat Day is celebrated to raise awareness of the importance of having a habitat or a home of our own.
The aforementioned ceremony was organized to discuss important aspects of the habitat and its importance for human development.
In 1986, the first World Habitat Day was celebrated in Nairobi, Kenya. The theme of that year’s World Habitat Day was “Shelter is my Right”.
The day is celebrated every year on the first Monday of the month of October. This year, World Habitat Day falls on October 2.
The day is celebrated in many countries around the world and various activities are organized to examine the problems of rapid urbanization and its impact on the environment and human poverty.
