The Department of Physiotherapy at Peshawar General Hospital organized a ceremony to mark World Physiotherapy Day, aimed at raising awareness about the significance and effectiveness of physiotherapy in modern healthcare. The event was attended by the hospital’s CEO, Professor Dr. Malik Javed Iqbal, Head of the Physiotherapy Department Professor Dr. Khaliq, Professor Dr. Momin Afridi, Dr. Zakirullah, faculty members, and other hospital staff. Addressing the gathering, speakers emphasized that World Physiotherapy Day symbolizes unity within the global physiotherapy community and serves to educate the public on the value of physical therapy, especially in the management of chronic pain and rehabilitation.
They noted that physiotherapy is a drug-free treatment approach that uses various physical methods, such as exercise, manual therapy, and movement, to relieve pain, improve mobility, and restore physical function.
Speakers highlighted the lack of awareness about physiotherapy in rural and underserved areas, where illiteracy and misconceptions often prevent people from seeking proper care. They stressed that physiotherapy has proven effective in managing bone and joint issues, muscular pain, inflammation, pediatric conditions, post-surgical rehabilitation, respiratory problems, and neurological and age-related disorders.
“Physiotherapy enables individuals to lead active and independent lives, especially in old age,” said one of the keynote speakers. “It is essential that people recognize its role not just in treatment, but also in prevention and long-term health maintenance.”
The event concluded with a call for greater public education and access to qualified physiotherapists across all regions of the province.
