Peshawar police on Sunday foiled an attempt to smuggle a large cache of illegal weapons and ammunition, arresting two inter-provincial arms smugglers during a snap check in Gulbahar.
According to a Capital City Police Peshawar press release issued here, the operation was carried out by SHO Gulbahar Police Station Adnan Afzal and his team under the supervision of DSP Gulbahar Circle Ehsan Marwat.
The arrested suspects were identified as Abdul Wahab son of Umar Daraz and his son Abdul Musawir son of Abdul Wahab, both residents of Bannu. Police said the father-son duo were allegedly members of an inter-provincial arms smuggling network.
Acting on a tip-off, police set up a checkpoint near Haji Camp Adda on the main GT Road and intercepted a car being used to transport the weapons.
During the search, police recovered 7 rifles, 30 pistols, 4,900 rounds of assorted caliber ammunition, and 105 magazines.
The vehicle used for smuggling was also taken into custody.
Police said the suspects confessed to their involvement in arms smuggling during initial interrogation.
A case has been registered against them and further investigation was under way to trace other members of the network and their supply chain.
In line with directives from senior officials, CCP Peshawar said snap checking and blockades across the district have been intensified to curb the movement of illegal arms and criminal elements.
