Power tariff likely to be scaled up from July 01

The government is likely to drop bomb shell of electricity on the people as the tariff of the electricity is likely to be scaled up by Rs 8 per unit from July 01. Ministry of energy sources said that the increase in the tariff will be made in basic tariff. At present basic tariff is more than Rs 16 per unit which can surpass average basic tariff Rs 24. According to ministry of petroleum sources the decision to enhance power tariff will be made following the NEPRA decision on the applications from 10 power distribution companies.

NEPRA has completed the hearing of applications from 10 power distribution companies regarding their revenue requirements. The decisions by NEPRA are likely this week on the applications of power distribution companies.

Power division will decide about enhancement in power tariff after the decisions are given by NEPRA.

Sources said the government will also decide about targeted subsidy after the matter is decided by NEPRA.

The power tariff will be scaled up in phases rather than in lump sum manner.
