Research termed key to progress in S&T

Speakers at the inaugural ceremony of two-day ‘Industrial Open House and Career Fair’ of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology have said that continued result-oriented research is a prerequisite for achieving technological breakthrough in the field of science and technology.
Over 50 multinational and national companies are participating in the industrial open house and final year students have displayed 100 research projects on the occasion. The participants said that universities should focus on promoting indigenous technology.
Irfan Wahab Khan, Telenor Pakistan chief executive officer, was the chief guest on this occasion and said that Pakistan needed higher levels of innovation and creativity while producing well-trained scientists, engineers and technologists who would make the country economically prosperous.
He said that inviting experts from industry to universities could help in solving many technological issues of the industry. Pakistan needs a large number of competent engineers in almost all disciplines, he said, adding that it was high time for the educational institutions and the industries to collaborate with each other. Engr Shamsul Mulk, president of Society for the Promotion of Engineering Sciences and Technology in Pakistan, said that the GIK Institute students had the capability to face new challenges.
Jehangir Bashar, Rector of GIK Institute, said that there were strong bonds between the institute and industry of the country. “We are ready to incorporate suggestions of indusial experts to improve quality of education for the graduates,” he said.
