The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police have formally launched Safe City projects in the terrorism-affected southern districts of Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat, aimed at strengthening law enforcement and improving public safety.
According to a statement, a contract agreement for the project was signed at the Central Police Office in Peshawar between DIG Information Technology and Project Director Safe City, Rai Ijaz Ahmed, representing KP Police, and General Manager Commercial Syed Amir Javed, representing the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
Inspector General of Police (IGP) KP, Zulfiqar Hameed, hailed the Safe City initiative as a major breakthrough in countering the threat posed by terrorists, particularly those linked to the Khawarij insurgency.
“The project will be instrumental in identifying, tracking, and eliminating terrorist elements. It will also help bring down street crime and other criminal activities,” he said.
The statement said that the project is expected to be completed within six months and will cover key strategic locations across the three districts.
It added that more than 400 high-resolution surveillance cameras at 86 critical sites will be installed at Dera Ismail Khan and 300 cameras at 69 locations in Bannu district will be installed.
Moreover, more than 250 cameras at 42 locations in district Lakki Marwat will be installed under the project.
