ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) has nullified the fine of Rs 10 lac imposed by PEMRA on 29 TV channels each for broadcasting wrong news of bomb blast in Lahore. The court issued these orders during hearing of appeal pleas of 29 channels Wednesday. The court has ordered PEMRA to review the matter afresh besides directing proceedings in respect of show cause notices issued to TV channels be completed within 3 months. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah remarked apparently PEMRA committee has no powers to initiate proceedings. A 3-member bench of SC presided over by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah took up the case for hearing Wednesday.
The lawyers told the court fine was imposed on several TV channels due to a wrong news in 2017. It was not reviewed clearly. The court has directed PEMRA to review the show cause notices issued to TV channels afresh.The court nullified the fine as well. Online
