Pakistan Peoples’ Party’s (PPP) Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar on Tuesday tendered his resignation from his Senate membership, it emerged.
“Met a senior leader from the party today. He conveyed that the party leadership wasn’t happy with my political positions and wanted my resignation from the senate. I gladly agreed to resign,” Khokhar tweeted Tuesday. Mustafa is perhaps one of the most vocal parliamentarians – who often express his views on issues bluntly, even if they are not in line with the party policy.
“As a political worker, I cherish my right to express my opinions on matters of public interest,” he said in a subsequent tweet.
“Thankful to the party leadership for giving me the senate seat from Sindh. Differences aside, it’s been a wonderful journey with them and wish them the best,” he said.
“Will be submitting my resignation in person to Chairmen Senate tomorrow, inshallah (by God’s willing),” he concluded in another tweet.
Mustafa received appreciation as well as support from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader. Former human rights minister Shireen Mazari termed Khokhar’s announcement “most unfortunate”.
“Your principled positions on human rights issues have been unwavering and beyond party politics. Senate will be poorer with your resignation,” she tweeted. PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan said Khokhar’s “name will remain in history”.
