ISLAMABAD
Bangladesh’s legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been handed a suspension from bowling in all competitions organized by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) due to his bowling action exceeding the legal elbow extension limit of 15 degrees.
The 37-year-old’s bowling action came under scrutiny during his lone appearance for Surrey in September, marking his return to the County Championship after more than a decade. On-field umpires raised concerns about his action, prompting an independent assessment.
Shakib underwent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month.
The ECB issued a statement confirming the results which were not in Shakib al Hasan’s favour: “Shakib completed an independent assessment at Loughborough University earlier this month, which found that the elbow extension in his bowling action exceeded the 15-degree threshold as defined in the Regulations.
“This suspension takes effect from the receipt of the independent assessment on Dec. 10, and follows the process set out in the ECB’s Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with a Suspected Illegal Bowling Action.”
To overturn the suspension, Shakib will need to undergo reassessment and prove that his elbow extension falls within the permissible limit.
