Peshawar has long been a cradle of exceptional talent, and Shazia Aslam is a shining example of this legacy. A multi-talented athlete, dedicated coach, and seasoned sports administrator, Shazia has become a symbol of determination and hope for women’s sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Her inspiring journey showcases how passion and perseverance can overcome even the most significant challenges.
Shazia’s passion for sports ignited in 1994 when she was a sixth-grader at Government Girls Higher Secondary School Nishtarabad. Her talent was undeniable, and she quickly became the backbone of her school’s success in inter-school sports festivals. Her sports teacher recalls that having Shazia on the team was a guarantee of victory.
After excelling in her school years, Shazia joined Frontier Girls College, where her athletic skills reached new heights. She represented Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in cricket, cycling, badminton, volleyball, and other sports, earning accolades at both national and inter-provincial levels. Her outstanding performances in the National Games and other major competitions cemented her reputation as one of the province’s top athletes.
Shazia’s achievements extend beyond the playing field. She has also made significant contributions as a coach and administrator. She worked with the Sports Department as a Regional Sports Officer and Women Coordinator, organizing events and competitions that showcased her exceptional management skills. Notably, she served as the first female Chief de Mission for the National Games, a role she performed with excellence.
Her dedication to sports continued during her 15-year tenure at Peshawar Model Degree College (PMDC), where she balanced teaching with her commitment to nurturing athletic talent. Under her leadership, the college consistently dominated inter-college and board-level competitions.
Shazia’s journey led her to City District Girls Degree College, Hashtnagri, where she continues to inspire students despite limited resources. The college lacks essential sports facilities, funds, and even a designated sports teacher, yet Shazia’s determination has filled this gap. Her coaching has enabled the college to win a gold medal in inter-board cycling competitions and achieve commendable positions in badminton and other sports.
Her impact extends beyond individual achievements; she is building a culture of sports excellence at the college. Students like Alia, Muskan, Fiza, and Hafsa are emerging as promising athletes under her mentorship.
Shazia firmly believes that Peshawar’s young women possess immense potential to excel in sports. However, she emphasizes that this talent needs proper nurturing. Immediate steps, such as allocating sports funds, providing basic facilities, and appointing a permanent sports teacher, are essential to sustain and grow this progress.
She envisions a future where her students represent Pakistan on global platforms, bringing pride to their city, province, and country.
Shazia Aslam’s story is a testament to the power of hard work and resilience. Her contributions to women’s sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are a source of inspiration, demonstrating that success is achievable even in the face of adversity.
To honor her efforts and ensure the continued development of women’s sports, it is crucial to provide her with the recognition and support she deserves. With the right resources and institutional backing, Shazia Aslam and City District Girls College can become a beacon of progress for women’s sports in Pakistan.
