Senator Sherry Rehman, Vice-President of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), paid a heartfelt tribute to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her 18th death anniversary, hailing her as an iconic leader whose vision and courage transformed Pakistan’s political and social landscape.
In her message, Senator Rehman described Shaheed Benazir Bhutto as an enduring symbol of bravery and resilience, recalling her historic role as the first democratically elected female prime minister of the Muslim world. She said Benazir Bhutto remained steadfast in her struggle for democracy and worked tirelessly to uplift the socio-economic conditions of the people of Pakistan.
Terming December 27 as one of the most somber dates in national history, Senator Rehman said the martyrdom of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto was not only an irreparable loss for the PPP but a profound tragedy for the entire nation. She noted that the void created by her absence continues to be felt across the country.
Senator Rehman also highlighted the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari during the critical period following the assassination, saying his call of Pakistan Khappay helped keep the nation united amid chaos and uncertainty. She described Shaheed Benazir Bhutto as a unifying force and the “chain linking all provinces,” whose politics and vision were firmly rooted in the Constitution.
She further said that under the leadership of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the party continues to carry forward Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s mission of a progressive, inclusive, and equitable Pakistan, with a strong focus on the rights of the marginalized, minorities, and women, while firmly opposing extremism and injustice.
Highlighting Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s lasting socio-economic legacy, Senator Rehman praised initiatives such as the Lady Health Worker Programme, recognized internationally for delivering essential healthcare to remote communities while empowering women economically.
She also underscored the importance of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), calling it a cornerstone of economic justice that continues to support millions through Benazir Kafalat, Benazir Nashonuma, and Benazir Taleemi Wazaif.
Concluding her tribute, Senator Rehman urged the nation to honor Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto by embracing unity, perseverance, and renewed commitment to her vision of a democratic, progressive, and empowered Pakistan.
