Lahore still tops the list of most polluted city in the world due to which the air quality index has reached dangerous levels.
According to the air quality index released by the Department of Environment Protection, the air quality index in various parts of Lahore is reaching dangerous levels.
Smog has continued to engulf major cities of Punjab as the ranking of Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached 424 on (Friday).
Residents choking in acrid smog pleaded with officials to take action. Air pollution has worsened in Pakistan in recent years, as a mixture of low-grade diesel fumes, smoke from seasonal crop burn off, and colder winter temperatures coalesce into stagnant clouds of smog.
Lahore, a bustling megacity of more than 11 million people in Punjab province near the border with India, consistently ranks among the worst cities in the world for air pollution.
In recent years residents have built their own air purifiers and taken out lawsuits against government officials in desperate bids to clean the air — but authorities have been slow to act, blaming the smog on India or claiming the figures are exaggerated.
According to the statistics, Lahore tops the list of most polluted cities, followed by indian city Delhi and Chinese city Wuhan. While the highest air quality index in Lahore is 680 in Kot Lakhpat, 565 in Model Town, 440 in Township, 481 in Anarkali,394 in Thokar Niaz Baig, 447 in DHA Phase-8, 652 in Gilberg, Gujranwala 41, Yawalpur 392, Sahiwal 340 and Raiwind 296 air quality index was recorded in the cities of the Punjab.
