Standing committee reviews key Issues on energy, forests, civil defense

An important meeting of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Cabinet Standing Committee held on Wednesday.
The meeting was chaired by Minister for Law, Aftab Alam. The committee discussed critical issues surrounding energy, forest conservation, and the restructuring of Civil Defense, a handout said.
The meeting, attended by key provincial ministers and department officials, focused on the performance enhancement of Civil Defense.
A proposal to place the department under the Home and Tribal Affairs Department’s control was deliberated, with the aim of improving its effectiveness during both wartime and peacetime.
The committee also reviewed illegal deforestation in Chitral’s Arandu Gol, where approximately one million cubic feet of timber was burnt annually.
Proposals were made to prevent illegal timber transportation and introduce alternative fuel sources.
A one-time amnesty for timber revenue sharing between the government and local stakeholders was also considered.
Further discussions were held on the financial and technical progress of the Gabral-Kalam and Madain hydropower projects, which aim to boost KP’s energy capacity.
Minister Aftab Alam emphasized the province’s natural resources, such as hydropower and minerals, as key drivers of sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to streamline efforts in Civil Defense restructuring, forest protection, and energy project implementation to ensure timely and effective outcomes.
