LANDIKOTAL: Assume you are 14-year-old. You have just topped in your all class in primary school and you’re looking forward to continuing your education. But then you realize that the curriculum is designed for normal students, and you neither hear nor speak. This is the reality for Hassnain and Sheraz, two orphan disabled brothers study in a local school in Landikotal but now they face an uncertain future.
Hassnain and Sheraz are the students of grade-9 of Khushal Public High School Pirokhel tehsil Landikotal.
Despite their disabilities, however, Hassnain and Sheraz are two of the smartest students in their class. They have been both topping their classes at the primary level, but now they are facing difficulties as the high school curriculum is tough which is purely designed for normal students while they neither hear nor speak.
Naqeeb Mashal, the principal of the school says, “Imagine being in a school, trying your best to learn and excel, but not being able to understand what the teacher is saying because you can’t hear them. Or not being able to answer a question because you can’t speak. This is why such children lag behind in professional and social life.”
Saud khan, the elder brother of the students says that they both have a dream to be educated but they now facing hurdles due to unavailability of all necessary facilities that are inevitable for deaf and mute person in a school.
“Education is their dream, they believe and are determined to make their voices heard for a better future”, he further said,
This is why Hassnain and Sheraz are demanding that the government establish a school in Landikotal that is designed specifically for disabled students. They want to be able to learn in an environment that is adapted to their needs, where they can feel included and supported.
It maybe added here that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government did a lot for education in the province. It’s time for the both provincial and federal government to step up and take responsibility for ensuring that every single person in Pakistan has an equal opportunity to realize their full potential and Hassnain and Sheraz’s story is a powerful reminder of why this is so important.
