The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar held a consultative workshop on “Development of Sustainable and Green Energy” on Friday.
A one-day international workshop was organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, UET Peshawar in support of University of Le Havre Normandy, France.
The objective of the workshop was to provide a platform for discussion among national and international researchers and students on the development of sustainable green energy to minimize the impact of climate change and beneficial recycling of waste materials in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
During his opening remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iftikhar Hussain stressed on the educational institutions to play their role to combat climate change and address the challenges posed by the climate crises.
He said academia should work on solutions to avert climate induced disasters, adding the recent flash floods across the country caused widespread destruction and millions of people were affected by the flood and termed the situation a major concern for people.
Speakers Dr Ahmed Banmar, University of Le Havre Normandy, France, Dr Hussain Kanber, University of Le Havre Normandy, France, Dr Arjamand Nizami, HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation Pakistan, Dr Jawad Ali HELVETAS Germany and Prof Dr Irshad Ahmad, Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering UET shed lights over the need of sustainable solutions.
The speakers emphasized on creating widespread awareness about climate change and its severe impact on human society through public awareness.
Dr Ahmed Banmar said that there is a dire need for think tanks to come up with solutions to address the challenges of climate change impacts and create frameworks to work at the policy-making level.
He explained the process of dredged sediment for safe dumping and potential use in construction i.e. ground improvement and emphasized the importance of pre-treated dredged sediment which is useful for agricultural purposes.
