The United Nation (UN)’s resident and humanitarian coordinator in Pakistan Julian Hearns called on the provincial health minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra and minister for higher education Kamran Bangash here on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Special Secretary Budget Muhammad Kabir Afridi and Secretary Planning and Development were also present on the occasion.
The provincial health minister informed the UN’s resident coordinator about the provincial government efforts taken for rehabilitation of the flood-hit population in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The meeting discussed strengthening coordination on climate change for the United Nations Cooperation Framework 2023-27, including aid activities and future action plans on behalf of the UN.
Taimur Saleem Jhagra briefed the UN coordinator Julian Hearns about the widespread damages caused by the recent flash floods in different districts of the province and overall impacts on the economy.
The Finance Minister appreciated the role of the UN for providing instant relief for the rehabilitation of flood hit people.
He said that rehabilitation of flood victims and recovery of damages is no less than a challenge for a small province like KP.
Julian Hearns said on the occasion that the provincial government should take necessary steps and other required measures to avoid future disasters in the context of climate change.
He said that the international community and other relevant humanitarian organizations should extend their support to Pakistan for rehabilitation of their flood hit families.
“Provinces should be represented at the UN Conference on Climate Change in New York scheduled to be held in coming December to highlight their issues and future action plans for combating the climatic changes,” he added.
