On the occasion of International Day of Rural Women, UN Women, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agriculture Department, organized a women farmers’ exhibition in Peshawar. The event highlighted the resilience, innovation, and contributions of rural women in the agriculture sector.
Dr. Samira Shams, Chairperson of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Commission on the Status of Women, was the chief guest. Speaking to the media, she said that rural women are the backbone of Pakistan’s agricultural economy, performing multiple roles from working in the fields to managing households and raising families, yet their efforts often go unrecognized.
She emphasized that the day was being observed to salute the determination and creativity of rural women, particularly those working as farmers. This exhibition is not just about agricultural products, but a celebration of women’s courage, innovation, and commitment, she remarked.
Dr. Shams further stated that rural women are not only farmers but also entrepreneurs, innovators, and community leaders, who are reshaping traditional farming practices with sustainable methods.
She urged the government and development partners to ensure women farmers’ equal access to land, credit, training, and technology. She added that recognizing rural women as decision-makers and agents of change is essential for inclusive growth.
The chairperson also appreciated initiatives such as women-led cooperatives, skill development programs, microfinance, and climate-resilient farming, terming them vital for sustainable agricultural development.
Empowering rural women is not a favor but a guarantee of progress. When women move forward, societies and nations prosper, Dr. Shams concluded.
The exhibition featured stalls from women farmers and agri-entrepreneurs across different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, showcasing local produce, organic farming practices, and agricultural innovations.
